8th grade families work with the High School Placement Director to formulate and finalize their list of best-fit high schools to which they will apply. The NYC DOE announces all public high school offers in early March. Below is a list of 100+ Public High School options curated by the High School Placement Director. This is by no means an exhaustive list, nor is it intended to be exclusive of any public high schools. Families may also find more information about each public high school by visiting the Department of Education’s High School Directory at MySchools.nyc. For statistics and assessments written by educators, families may refer to Insidschools.org. We encourage families to consider the public schools on this list based on the following criteria:

Public School Criteria

List of 6 frequently asked questions.

  • Four-Year Graduation Rate

We recommend considering schools with four-year graduation rates of 80 percent or above, as this metric is a good indicator of stronger college preparatory academic curricula.
  • College Enrollment Rate

We recommend considering schools with college enrollment rates of 75 percent or above, as this metric is a good indicator of stronger college preparatory academic curricula and college guidance programs. Nevertheless, there are many high schools with slightly lower college enrollment rates that should be considered.
  • Academic and Safety Statistics

InsideSchools.org is a wonderful and free resource available to families that provides assessments of individual public schools in New York City.
  • Diverse Extracurricular Programs and Activities

MySchools.nyc, high school websites, and InsideSchools.org are free resources available to families that shed light on the extracurricular athletic, academic, and arts opportunities available at each NYC Public High School that can help a family determine a best-fit high school environment for their rising 9th grader.
  • Distance from Student's Home

The NYC Department of Education has discontinued geographical priority groups. Any family in any borough may apply to any schools outside of their geographical priority groups. Please consider schools in other boroughs that are within about an hour of travel time by mass transportation.
  • Academic Culture, College Readiness, and Career Exploration

MySchools.nyc, school websites, and InsideSchools are free resources available to families that provide metrics that can help a family determine a best-fit high school environment for their rising 9th grader.
